Harry C. Johnson

Harry C. Johnson, age 95 of Watertown, passed away Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at the Lighthouse of Waconia.
Funeral service Wednesday, June 22, 2016 at 3 p.m. at the Evangelical Free Church (509 Jefferson Ave. S.W.), Watertown with Rev. Paul Kling and Rev. Dan Osborn officiating; visitation from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at church; interment Watertown Public Cemetery.
Harry was born on April 28, 1921, the son of Rudolph and Gerda (Sjolin) Johnson in Djursdala, Sweden. On October 16, 1943 Harry was united in marriage to Louella Sutherland at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Buffalo.
Harry served in the United States Army from October 4, 1943 to September 22, 1945, and was a mortar gunner in General Patton’s army, 79th division, Company A, Second platoon 315th Infantry. Among his honors were Purple Heart (wounded November 15, 1944), two Bronze battle stars, Combat infantry badge, Distinguished Unit badge, and European African Eastern Ribbon.
From the time Harry’s daughters could remember, their dad was always willing to extend a helping hand to his family (there are numerous stories), a neighbor in need, or in a situation related to work. Harry’s gifts were acts of service. It was his kindness (which came from a genuine relationship with Jesus) that lead him into these acts of service! He always went the extra mile! If he was wronged he would say, what good does it do to avenge, someone else will take care of that!
Harry was a proud soldier and WWII D-day survivor who loved and fought for his country, but never forgot his homeland of Sweden where he was born and was able to visit many times. Hunting and fishing were a joy to share with his family, and eating the fruits of his labors were the best rewards! His commitment of his faith first, meant God was top priority in his life. He was a man who loved his family and his Lord. A man who was a prayer warrior who loved to sing about his faith.
Harry’s joy extended to the next generation. He really enjoyed going to grandkids and great-grandkids events and sports up until last year. He cherished and adored each of his girls, the sons that came to him through marriage, the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Harry truly loved the family God gave to him and his wife, Louella. He delighted in spending time with extended family as well. He also embraced all those who became like family to him because his arms and heart were open wide to receive whomever God brought him to include. He will be remembered for the genuine love in his heart for people!
Harry, a “friend to all,” had an irrepressible hospitable nature. He was relational to the core and making new friends always came easily to him. Especially, if it involved a good cup of coffee! Harry engaged in conversation wherever he went. The family often joked and said, “When you meet Dad, you’re now his best friend! He had hundreds of ‘best friends’”! Harry will long be remembered for his quick wit and sharp mind to the very end. He was the “checker champion” at The Lighthouse, where he lived but was quickly “ready to go” when God called him home!
Harry also had a worldview even at 95 years of age which is why he related to all people, even his great-grandchildren loved and connected with him. He left a “legacy of kindness” to be remembered and emulated!
Harry was preceded in death by his wife Louella; father and mother Rudolph and Gerda Johnson; father-in-law and mother-in-law Arthur and Hannah Sutherland; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Ruthy Johnson, Audrey and Wally Strandquist, Novia and Willard Strandquist, Douglas Erickson.
Harry is survived by his loving family: daughters and sons-in-law Carol and Gordon Lund of Dassel, Renee and Elwin Bauer of Mayer, Nancy and David Schrupp of Watertown; grandchildren Britta and Craig Aycock, Peter and Susan Lund, Karna and Dr. Jimmy Ching, Sonja Bocken, Joel and Katie Lund, Jamie and Jim Steinle, Jason and Amy Bauer, Cole Schrupp, Matthew Schrupp, Erin and Esteban Abbey; great-grandchildren Victoria, Lara and Gannon Aycock, Anders, Christian, Ana Grace and Lars Ching, Hannah, Kayle and Chase Bocken, Gavyn, Brynn and Natalia Lund, Allison Steinle and fiancée Nick Polejewski, Jacob Steinle, Bryce Kallenbach, Jenna and Meah Bauer; brother Hjelton Johnson of Crystal; sister-in-law Joyce Erickson of New Hope; nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
Casket Bearers are Harry’s grandchildren.
